1000 Plateaus presents “This is not Boring” at Coastguard Studio, Portsmouth on Saturday 2nd July 2016 #thisisnotboring #coastguardstudio
Last Saturday had been months in the making. 1000 Plateaus had been in touch to ask if we would be interested in taking part in their next production (see previous blog posts), but the execution was something else. Two rooms (and a garden) of various art platforms, coming together to deconstruct a brief about boarder crossings.
Being greedy to be involved we wanted to do two different performances. The first was a collaboration with local artist extraordinaire, Los Dave (more info here: Dave's Blog ). Dave had a concept to merge live landscape painting with an improvised soundtrack based on loops and largely hand built instruments (see Dave's 'Bikesichord' below). We added some words to the performance and developed a theme that fed back between sound and paint.

I don't know what it was like from an audience perspective, but it was moving and reflective for us.
The second performance was a different visual aesthetic. Silly Little Man and I prepared a film referencing the 1979 film 'The Warriors', in reverse, retracing their steps back to the Bronx (the title), yet taking in a soundtrack of snippets from artists that grew up along the route. A complicated live musical score taking in vinyl and mp3s from Neil Diamond to Ella Fitzgerald, via The Beastie Boys et al.
We had a great time, the 1000 Plateaus organisers curated a great event, and one our small town of Southsea needs more of. Hopefully with more in the pipeline.
